Horticulture
Unlike most exotic invasives, Alliaria petiolata (Garlic Mustard) actually has edible leaves, flowers, and seeds. You can chop the young foliage and petals into salads as a tangy, nutritious flavoring, or you can steam the greens. But please PULL OUT this nasty plant slowly by the roots while you’re harvesting.
Garlic Mustard presents a serious threat to native by stealing nutrients and light from native plants, including from its own cousins (!) the dentaria species (Toothworts) – the primary food for the West Virginia White Butterfly.
Sometimes we take for granted those huge trees overhanging the yard as well as the turf underfoot. But each have the same basic needs as your favorite flowers by the front walk, the shrubs in front of the house, and the veggies in the garden. They need water, light, and especially TLC while they establish as new plantings.
We mulch new lawns just as we would mulch a tree or a shrub when it goes in. Straw is spread over seeded areas to retain moisture, discourage erosion and provide a bit of shade for tender new plants. Don't worry about raking it off–it will decompose on its own over time, providing a little more food in the process.

Gardens are living, breathing, growing, changing things.
And caring for a garden is an ongoing experiment with great challenges and wonderful rewards! Our job is to help you start off in the right direction, and to provide as much support as you need along the way.

Right Plant Right Place.
That's one of our guiding principles as we design, install and care for the gardens of our clients. In the Berkshire-Taconic region, we have a wide range of soil types, levels of acidity (pH); sun, shade, exposure to wind; poorly-drained clay or hardpan vs. well-drained sand or gravel; and in the landscape: compaction, pests, diseases, and structures to take into consideration. We have to be on our toes.
Regular care is what keeps our clients' gardens beautiful. Our team of gardeners performs weekly maintenance, spring and fall cleanups, weeding, deadheading, mulching, fertilization and pruning to keep annuals, perennials and shrubs looking their best throughout the season.
"One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides." ~W.E. Johns, The Passing Show
